EDITORS COMMENTS
Abraham Bogaert (1653-1727), a Dutch author, playwright, and poet, is depicted in this striking 17th-century portrait. The image, a copperplate engraving by Abraham de Blois after a painting by David van der Plas, was created for Bogaert's publication "De Roomsche Monarchy," or "The Roman Monarchy," published in Utrecht in 1697. Bogaert's work delved into the lives and reigns of the ancient Roman Emperors, including Julius Caesar, Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, Nero, Vespasian, Titus, Domitian, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, Marcus Aurelius, Commodus, and Severus. The portrait, with its classical motifs and regal attire, reflects Bogaert's deep interest in the history and culture of ancient Rome. The engraving shows Bogaert dressed in the robes of a scholar, with a quill pen in hand and a pile of books at his feet. In the background, an image of the Roman Emperor Didius Julianus, who ruled for only a brief period in 180 AD, is depicted. The presence of the Roman Emperor in the portrait may be a nod to Bogaert's extensive research on the Caesars and the Roman monarchy. Bogaert's work was significant in its time, as the study of classical antiquity was a popular pursuit among the intellectual elite of Europe. His writings provided insights into the lives and reigns of the Roman Emperors, shedding light on the political, social, and cultural aspects of ancient Rome. This portrait of Abraham Bogaert, with its scholarly setting and classical influences, serves as a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to the study and celebration of Rome's rich history.
