EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Selaginella jungermannioides fern, also known as the apple fern or Haller's Selaginella. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The Selaginella jungermannioides fern is a unique and intriguing plant, belonging to the Selaginellaceae family. It is often referred to as an apple fern due to the apple-like appearance of its spores. The plant is native to tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and it is characterized by its small, scale-like leaves that form dense mats. This particular illustration showcases the delicate details of the fern's leaves and spores, which were meticulously observed and rendered in exquisite detail by Turpin. The use of the stipple engraving technique adds texture and depth to the image, bringing out the intricate patterns and structures of the plant. The Selaginella jungermannioides fern was also known to the botanical community as Lycopodium jungermannioides or Lycopodio a foglie di jungermannia, and it was named after the botanist Johann Christian Friedrich Höhne, who was also known as Dell'Haller. The plant was often confused with Bartramia halleriana, another fern species, but the two can be distinguished by their different spore structures. This beautiful and historically significant illustration is a testament to the artistry and scientific precision of Turpin and the natural history community of the 19th century. It continues to captivate and inspire appreciation for the natural world and the intricacies of plant life.
