EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving depicts Spananthe paniculata, also known as Hydrocotyle spananthe, Idrocotile spanante, or Ramgoat, a lesser-known edible plant native to South America. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Sciences, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century. Turpin's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate depiction of the plant's yellow flowers, which grow in panicles, as well as its ulmifolia, or elm-leaved, foliage. The Spananthe paniculata, also referred to as Dashalong or Turner's water-plantain, has a long history of use as a vegetable and fruit in South America. Its tubers and young shoots are edible and have been used in traditional medicine to treat various ailments. This beautiful engraving, engraved by Corsi, showcases the plant in all its glory, with its delicate foliage and vibrant yellow flowers. The use of the copperplate stipple engraving technique adds depth and texture to the illustration, making it a true work of art. The Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali was a groundbreaking work in the field of natural science, featuring accurate and detailed illustrations of a wide range of plants, animals, and minerals. This illustration of Spananthe paniculata is a testament to the skill and dedication of Turpin and the team at Batelli e Figli, who produced this work over 180 years ago.
