EDITORS COMMENTS
This copperplate engraving, taken from Abraham Rees' Cyclopedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts, Sciences and Literature published in London in 1819, showcases various types of hygrometers used during the 18th century to measure moisture content. The illustration includes several notable inventors and their designs: Anderson's hygrometer at number 8, credited to Dr. John Anderson, features a glass tube filled with mercury and a hair that bends when moisture is present. At number 9, Dr. Robert Hooke's design includes a glass tube with a hair suspended over a bulb filled with mercury. Dr. Hale's hygrometer, number 11, utilizes a glass tube with a wick that absorbs moisture and changes the length of the meniscus. James Ferguson's design, numbers 12 and 13, includes a glass tube filled with mercury and a float that rises or falls depending on the moisture content. The Bradfords hydrostatical instrument for weighing coin and checking weight and purity, numbers 1-3, is also depicted in the illustration. This instrument, while not a hygrometer, is included as it was a popular scientific instrument of the time. The intricate details of each design are beautifully captured in this engraving, offering a glimpse into the scientific advancements of the 18th century.
