EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisitely detailed hand-colored steel engraving depicts the Veraguan Mango, or Anthracothorax veraguensis, also known as the Mango Hummingbird or Trochilus mango. The image is taken from Sir William Jardine's Naturalist's Library: Ornithology, specifically the volume dedicated to Hummingbirds, published in Edinburgh by W.H. Lizars in 1833. The Veraguan Mango is a small, vibrant hummingbird native to Central America, with distinctive iridescent green and purple feathers on its back and a brilliant orange-red throat. The male, as depicted in this illustration, has a long, curved bill and a forked tail. The female, not shown here, has a less vibrant throat and a shorter bill. Hummingbirds are known for their unique ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings, which can beat up to 80 times per second. They are also the only group of birds that are able to fly backwards. The Veraguan Mango feeds primarily on nectar from flowers, using its long, extendible tongue to reach deep into the blooms. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of the naturalists and illustrators of the 19th century. It provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this and iconic bird species.
