EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving, created by Theodore Goetz for Friedrich Johann Bertuch's Bilderbuch fur Kinder (Picture Book for Children) in 1823, showcases two distinct species of deer: the White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) and the Malayan Sambar Deer (Rusa unicolor equina). In the foreground, a White-tailed Deer stag stands proudly, his large antlers adorned with intricate branches. Two does and a fawn are seen in the background, their white tails and spots blending seamlessly with the foliage. White-tailed deer are native to North America and are easily recognizable by their distinctive white tail, which they use as a warning signal. In the background, a Malayan Sambar Deer doe is depicted grazing peacefully. The Malayan Sambar Deer, also known as the Malaccan Hind or Indian Muntjac, is native to Southeast Asia. This species is smaller than the White-tailed Deer and has a reddish-brown coat with white spots. The doe in the engraving is shown with small antlers, which are present in both males and females of this species. This beautiful illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of these two deer species but also provides a glimpse into the natural history of the 19th century. The meticulous attention to detail in the hand-coloring and copperplate engraving techniques adds to the enchanting allure of this timeless work.
