EDITORS COMMENTS
In this hand-colored copperplate engraving by Migliavacca, taken from Giulio Ferrario's "Costumes Ancient and Modern of the Peoples of the World," we witness a pivotal moment in Swiss history: the arrest of the legendary hero William Tell in Altdorf, Switzerland, in 1307. William Tell, a brave and defiant figure of the Swiss Confederacy, is depicted here with his son, standing before the town's authorities. Tell's strong, determined expression contrasts sharply with the stern faces of Albrecht Gessler, the Austrian governor of the region, and his henchmen. The reason for Tell's arrest: he had refused to salute Gessler's hat, which the governor had placed on a pole as a symbol of his authority. This act of defiance was a bold challenge to Gessler's rule and sparked widespread resistance among the Swiss Confederates, also known as the Eidgenossen. The scene is populated with other notable figures of the time, including Walter Fürst of Ur, Werner Stauffacher of Schwyz, Arnold von Melchtal of Unterwalden, and the Tre Capi of the Confederazione Elvetica. Their presence underscores the significance of this moment in Swiss history, as it marks the beginning of the Swiss War of Liberation against Austrian rule. This engraving, with its intricate details and vibrant colors, offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time of courage, resistance, and the birth of a national identity. It is a testament to the enduring power of historical illustrations to capture the imagination and inspire us with tales of heroism and determination.
