EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Arthur Winnington-Ingram, the sixth Bishop of London, is seen in full regalia as he attends the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in Westminster Abbey on June 12, 1937. The Bishop, who served in this esteemed position from 1935 until his retirement in 1951, is depicted wearing the traditional robes and mitre of the Bishop of London. The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth was a significant moment in British history, as the new monarch ascended to the throne following the abdication of his brother, King Edward VIII. The event brought together the political and religious leaders of the time, including Winnington-Ingram, to witness the formal investiture of the new king and queen. The Bishop of London, who was born on July 17, 1876, had a distinguished career in the Church of England. He was educated at Marlborough College and Trinity College, Cambridge, before being ordained as a priest in 1901. Winnington-Ingram went on to serve as a chaplain in the army during World War I and later became the Dean of Westminster in 1933, a position he held for just two years before being appointed Bishop of London. This photograph captures a moment of history, as Winnington-Ingram, with his solemn expression and proud bearing, stands among the other dignitaries at the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The image is a testament to the important role of the Church of England in British society and the enduring tradition of the coronation ceremony.
