EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the reverent and regal presence of Cosmo Gordon Lang, Archbishop of Canterbury, during the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth at Westminster Abbey on May 12, 1937. Lang, dressed in his full ecclesiastical robes, officiated at the historic event as the spiritual leader of the Church of England and the senior bishop in the Anglican Communion. The Archbishop of Canterbury, born on February 1, 1864, was the 79th person to hold the position. He was appointed to the role in 1928, following the retirement of Randall Davidson. Lang's tenure as Archbishop saw him navigate the tumultuous political and social climate of the 1930s, including the abdication of King Edward VIII in 1936. The coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth marked a significant moment in British history, and Lang's role in the ceremony underscored his importance as a religious and national figure. The solemn expression on his face in this photograph reflects the gravity of the occasion and the weight of responsibility he bore as the spiritual guide for the people of England. Lang's legacy as Archbishop of Canterbury extended beyond his tenure, and he was later created a Baron in 1942. He continued to serve the Church and the nation until his death on November 16, 1945. This photograph stands as a testament to his distinguished career and his pivotal role in the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth.
