EDITORS COMMENTS
On the fateful day of April 22, 1854, French and British warships unleashed a devastating bombardment on the Russian port city of Odessa, marking a significant event in the Crimean War. In this evocative image from the Mary Evans Prints Online archive, the French steamer Vauban is shown engulfed in flames, a testament to the intense barrage of red-hot shots fired from the Russian batteries. The Vauban, along with other Allied vessels, had approached the port with the intention of neutralizing the Russian Black Sea Fleet and securing the strategic city. The Russian forces, however, put up a fierce resistance, retaliating with heavy artillery fire. The Vauban, unfortunately, bore the brunt of their retaliation, as seen in this haunting image. The bombardment of Odessa was a turning point in the Crimean War, paving the way for the Allied forces to gain a foothold in the region and ultimately lead to the eventual defeat of the Russian forces. This powerful photograph offers a glimpse into the raw power and destruction of war, as well as the bravery and resilience of those involved.
