EDITORS COMMENTS
This print depicts the renowned Persian poet, Omar Khayyam, as he contemplates the passage of time beneath the shade of a tree. The scene is inspired by verses from Khayyam's most famous work, the Rubaiyat, which was first published in 1859 in Europe from a Persian manuscript discovered in Calcutta. Omar Khayyam (1050-1123 AD) was a Persian polymath, known for his contributions to mathematics, astronomy, and poetry. His Rubaiyat verses, written in the quatrain form, are filled with wisdom, humor, and a philosophical perspective on life. The verses often explore themes of love, friendship, and the transience of life. In this print, artist Gilbert James masterfully captures the essence of Khayyam's poetry. The poet, dressed in traditional Persian garb, sits under a tree, surrounded by the rolling hills and vineyards of the Persian countryside. His contemplative gaze is fixed on the horizon, as if lost in thought. The intricate details of the tree's leaves, the rippling water in the foreground, and the delicate flowers in the background add to the serene and reflective atmosphere of the scene. Circa 1922, this print is a beautiful testament to the enduring appeal of Omar Khayyam's poetry and the timeless wisdom it imparts. The artistry of Gilbert James brings the verses to life, inviting us to join Omar Khayyam in his contemplation of the fleeting nature of existence.
