EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a United States Air Force Convair B-36D-1-CF Peacemaker, specifically 44-92026 (msn 23), assigned to the 7th Bombardment Wing at Detroit, Michigan, in 1951. Originally built as a Consolidated B-36B-1-CF Peacemaker, this historic aircraft first took to the skies on July 8, 1948, and was accepted by the USAF on November 25, 1948. During its tenure with the Air Force, it underwent flight tests for RB-36D radomes and propeller vibration. After being allotted to the 7th Bombardment Wing at Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas, it was later converted to a B-36D-10-CF by Convair. On September 1, 1952, this B-36D was damaged by a tornado at Carswell AFB, which resulted in it colliding with a visiting B-36F 49-2675 of the 95th Bombardment Wing from Biggs AFB in El Paso, Texas. The aircraft was then modified to Featherweight Configuration III and later retired to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center at Davis-Monthan AFB on June 4, 1956, where it was ultimately scrapped. This photograph offers a glimpse into the history of the United States Air Force and the remarkable Convair B-36D Peacemaker.
