EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning hand-coloured lithograph depicts the immature Philomachus pugnax, also known as the Ruff, a wading bird belonging to the Scolopacidae family within the Charadriiformes order. The Sauropsida class, to which birds belong, is represented here in its full mottled brown glory. The Ruff is a migratory bird, with a distinctive long, red, inflatable throat pouch that is used for courtship displays during the breeding season. This particular image is Plate 62 from John Gould's "The Birds of Great Britain," published in Volume 4 during the 19th century. The meticulous attention to detail is evident in the intricate plumage patterns, the sharp lines of the beak and legs, and the lifelike quality of the bird's expression. The Ruff can be found in wetland habitats during the daytime hours, making it a common sight for birdwatchers and naturalists. This illustration not only showcases the natural beauty of this avian species but also transports us back in time to the Victorian era, when such intricately crafted works of art were the pinnacle of natural history documentation.
