Pier, Margate
Pier, Margate - looking out through Ships Masts over water to town. Part of Box 145 Boswell Collection - East Coast. Margate was recorded as Meregate in 1264 and as Margate in 1299, but the spelling continued to vary into modern times. The name is thought to refer to a pool gate or gap in a cliff where pools of water are found, often allowing swimmers to jump in. The cliffs of the Isle of Thanet are composed of chalk, a fossil-bearing rock. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the timeless beauty of Margate Pier, a cherished landmark on the East Coast of England. The pier, constructed in the late 18th century, juts out into the North Sea, providing a vantage point to gaze upon the quaint town nestled beneath the cliffs. The ships' masts in the foreground add a sense of history and industry, while the shimmering water reflects the changing skies above. Margate, first recorded as Meregate in 1264 and later as Margate in 1299, is believed to derive its name from the Old English term for a pool gate or gap in a cliff where pools of water are found. The chalk cliffs of the Isle of Thanet, on which Margate lies, are rich in fossils, offering a glimpse into the past. The spelling of Margate's name has varied throughout history, but its allure and charm have remained constant. This photograph, taken around the turn of the 20th century, captures a moment in time when the town was a popular seaside destination for visitors seeking relaxation and rejuvenation. Today, Margate continues to attract visitors from near and far, who come to enjoy its unique character, rich history, and stunning natural beauty.
