EDITORS COMMENTS
This polychrome relief portrays Pharaoh Thutmosis III, the sixth ruler of Egypt's 18th Dynasty and one of the most successful military leaders in ancient Egyptian history. Dated back to the New Kingdom, around 1490-1436 BC, this masterpiece was discovered in the Thutmose Temple in Deir el-Bahari, near Luxor. The intricately sculpted relief showcases Thutmose III in a profile view, wearing the royal crown adorned with the falcon god Horus, and a long, flowing beard. The use of polychromy, a technique that involves applying colored pigments to the relief, adds depth and vibrancy to the artwork. The pharaoh's skin is depicted in a warm, golden hue, while his garments are painted in various shades of red, blue, and green. The relief also features the iconic image of Thutmose III holding a captive Syrian prince by the hair, symbolizing his military prowess and the expansion of the Egyptian Empire. In the background, a serpent, a symbol of the god Wadjet, protectively wraps its body around the pharaoh's throne. This relief, now housed in the Luxor Museum in Egypt, offers a unique glimpse into the artistic and historical significance of the New Kingdom period. With its stunning use of color and intricate details, it continues to captivate viewers and inspire scholars of ancient Egyptian art and history.
