EDITORS COMMENTS
In this engraving from the 19th century, we find Pope Leo XIII (1810-1903), the Italian Pope who served from 1878 to 1903, during an audience at the Vatican. Born as Vincenzo Gioacchino Pecci, Leo XIII was a significant figure in the history of the Catholic Church, known for his progressive views and reforms. The image captures the pope seated on his throne, dressed in his papal robes and adorned with the triple tiara, a symbol of his ecclesiastical authority. Surrounding him is a group of clergy members and cardinals, all dressed in their respective vestments, attentively listening to the pontiff's words. The interior of the hall is richly decorated, with intricate designs and vibrant colors, reflecting the grandeur and holiness of the occasion. Two guards, standing at the entrance of the hall, keep a watchful eye over the audience, ensuring the safety and order of the gathering. The engraving, produced by The Iberian Illustration in 1888, has been beautifully colored, adding depth and detail to the image, transporting us back in time to this historic moment. Leo XIII's papacy was marked by numerous encyclicals, which addressed various social and moral issues, including the condition of the working class, the role of the laity in the Church, and the importance of religious freedom. This audience at the Vatican serves as a testament to the pope's leadership and the reverence he commanded during his time in office. The 19th century was a period of significant change in Europe, and this image offers a glimpse into the contemporary world of the Catholic Church, providing insight into the people, customs, and traditions of the time.
