EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph by German artist and illustrator Heinrich Harder depicts a scene of primitive men armed with spears in pursuit of a formidable glyptodon, an extinct mammal belonging to the family Glyptodontidae. The glyptodon, resembling a large armored armadillo, is shown with its massive protective shell, powerful limbs, and menacingly sharp spikes. The scene is set in the prehistoric world, a time when these ancient creatures roamed the earth. Heinrich Harder's illustration, titled "Tiere der Urwelt" or "Animals of the Prehistoric World," was published in 1916 in Hamburg, Germany. Harder, known for his landscapes and book illustrations, meticulously captured the intricacies of the glyptodon's armor, the determination in the hunters' expressions, and the raw power of the hunt. The glyptodon, though not technically a dinosaur, lived during the Pleistocene epoch, around 2.6 million to 10,000 years ago. These creatures were herbivores, reaching lengths of up to 10 feet and weighing as much as 7 tons. Their armor, which covered their entire body except for their bellies, protected them from predators. The primitive men in the illustration, armed with spears, would have hunted the glyptodon in groups, targeting the vulnerable underbelly. The scene portrayed by Harder is a testament to the challenges and triumphs of early human existence, as they adapted to their environment and hunted the magnificent creatures that roamed the earth during the prehistoric era.
