EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting image captures the moment of tragedy as the RMS Lusitania, a British ocean liner, is struck by a second torpedo off the coast of Kinsale Head in Ireland during World War I. The drawing, created for the New York Herald and the London Sphere in 1915, depicts the massive ship with a gaping hole in its hull, billowing smoke, and a second torpedo making its way towards the stricken vessel. The Lusitania, a symbol of luxury and sophistication, was sailing from New York to Liverpool when it was hit by a German U-boat, resulting in the loss of over 1,100 lives, including 128 American citizens. The sinking of the Lusitania was a turning point in the war and led to increased tensions between Germany and the United States, ultimately contributing to America's entry into the conflict. This poignant and powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of war and the fragility of life.
