EDITORS COMMENTS
Cape Juby: A Daring Aerial Survey Flight by Miss Delphine Reynolds and W.G. Pudney in 1931 This evocative photograph captures the moment of takeoff for an extraordinary aerial survey expedition led by British aviator Miss Delphine Reynolds and her pilot, W.G. Pudney, in March 1931. Departing from Hanworth aerodrome, they embarked on a daring journey down the West African coast in their Blackburn Bluebird IV, registration number G-ABGF. Their mission was to conduct a comprehensive survey of the region, starting with Tangier and ultimately reaching Bathurst, Gambia. However, their aircraft, a sturdy and innovative Blackburn Bluebird IV, was not designed for the harsh conditions of the West African coast. After two and a half months of service, the metal airframe had corroded beyond repair, leaving them stranded in Sierra Leone. Despite the unexpected setback, this intrepid duo demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination. Their aerial survey flight was an essential contribution to the understanding of the West African coastline, providing valuable information for transportation, communication, and infrastructure development. This photograph, taken during their historic journey, encapsulates the spirit of adventure and exploration that characterized the early days of aviation. The Blackburn Bluebird IV, with its distinctive shape and the determined expressions of Miss Reynolds and W.G. Pudney, stands as a testament to their courage and the advancements in aviation technology during this era.
