EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the first flight of the de Havilland DH106 Comet 4, registration G-APDA, at Hatfield on 27th April 1958. The Comet 4 was the upgraded version of the pioneering de Havilland Comet jet airliner, which made its maiden commercial flight in 1952 and became the world's first jet airliner to enter passenger service. This particular aircraft underwent extensive modifications, including new Rolls-Royce Avon RA.14 engines and a redesigned wing, resulting in increased range and improved performance. The first flight of the Comet 4 marked a significant milestone in aviation history, as it demonstrated the potential of jet transport aircraft for long-haul travel. In this image, we see the sleek and modern aircraft taxing on the runway, ready for takeoff, with engineers and crew members in attendance. The Comet 4 would go on to serve with various airlines around the world, including BOAC, before being retired in the late 1970s. This photograph is a testament to the groundbreaking innovation and engineering achievements of the de Havilland Comet and the jet age.
