EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the intricately decorated royal cartridge of Queen Hatshepsut, an influential Pharaoh of Egypt's Eighteenth Dynasty during the New Empire period. The cartridge, now housed in the Temple of Hatshepsut at Deir el-Bahari, was once used to transport the divine ba (spirit) of the queen during her journey to the afterlife. The hieroglyphic inscriptions on the cartridge are written in the ancient Egyptian hieratic script, which was used for religious texts and administrative documents. The script is adorned with vivid hieroglyphs, including the sacred symbols of the beetle and the bird, which represented the god Khepri and the goddess Nut, respectively. These symbols were believed to ensure the pharaoh's rebirth and protection in the afterlife. The Temple of Hatshepsut, also known as Djeser-Djeseru, was built during the queen's reign around 1479-1458 BC. The temple complex is renowned for its unique architectural design, which combines elements of both ancient Egyptian and Mediterranean influences. The temple's terraced structure rises majestically from the desert plateau, offering a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. Queen Hatshepsut was a remarkable figure in ancient Egyptian history, who ruled as a regent for her stepson Thutmose III and later assumed the throne in her own right. She is celebrated for her military campaigns, building projects, and religious reforms, which contributed significantly to the prosperity and cultural development of the Eighteenth Dynasty.
