EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the moment South African troops disembark from a train at Bura Camp in Kenya during World War I, in 1916. The 1st South African Infantry Brigade, part of the 1st South African Division, had been transported from the Cape Colony to East Africa to reinforce British forces fighting against the German army under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. The troops, dressed in their uniforms and armed with rifles, are seen stepping down from the carriages, their expressions a mix of anticipation and fatigue. The railway line stretches out behind them, a testament to the logistical efforts that had brought them thousands of miles from home. Bura Camp, located in present-day Isiolo County, was a major base for the British forces in East Africa, and the arrival of these troops marked a significant boost to their numbers and morale. The South African soldiers would go on to play a crucial role in the eventual defeat of the German army, contributing to the Allied victory in the East African campaign of World War I.
