EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning quartzite statue, dating back to the 12th Dynasty of Egypt's Middle Kingdom era, around 1850 BC, depicts Ankhrekhu, an official of great rank during the ancient Egyptian civilization. Ankhrekhu is shown seated with a barefoot left foot, while his right foot is folded under him. He wears a cloak that covers his shoulders and chest, leaving his arms exposed. The intricate folds of his garment are expertly carved, adding to the lifelike quality of the statue. Ankhrekhu's face is expressive, with a serene yet alert gaze, and his ears are adorned with delicate hieroglyphs. The hieroglyphic inscription on the statue's base identifies Ankhrekhu by name and his official title. This impressive statue, now housed in the British Museum in London, United Kingdom, offers a glimpse into the private lives of the powerful figures of ancient Egypt and the rich artistic traditions of the Middle Kingdom period.
