EDITORS COMMENTS
Thomas Fuller (1608-1661): A Prominent English Historian of the Seventeenth Century This evocative portrait captures the scholarly and thoughtful demeanor of Thomas Fuller, an English historian and Anglican clergyman, born in Thorp Arch, near Wetherby, Yorkshire, on March 2, 1608. Fuller's extensive historical works, which covered a wide range of topics, contributed significantly to the development of English history. Thomas Fuller's education began at the grammar school in Wetherby, followed by studies at Trinity College, Cambridge. He was ordained as a deacon in 1632 and a priest in 1633, and served as a curate in various parishes. During the English Civil War, he was a Royalist chaplain, and after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, he was appointed as a prebendary of Canterbury Cathedral. Fuller's most famous works include "The Holy War," a history of the Crusades, and "The History of the Worthies of England," a collection of biographies of notable English figures from pre-Roman times to the present. He also wrote "The Ancient and Present State of Cambridge," a history of the university, and "The Church-Historian," a history of the Church of England. This portrait, with its solemn expression and the books and quill pen that symbolize Fuller's dedication to scholarship, underscores his reputation as a meticulous and erudite historian. Thomas Fuller's works remain valuable sources for understanding the history of England during the early modern period.
