EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the solemn interment of the Unknown Soldier under the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, France on the 11th of November 1920. The Unknown Soldier, a symbol of the countless lives lost during World War 1, was interred in a simple tomb inscribed with the words "Ici Repose Un Soldat Francais Mort Pour La Patrie 1914-1918" (Here lies a French soldier who died for his country 1914-1918). The ceremony was attended by high-ranking dignitaries, military officials, and thousands of Parisians who came to pay their respects. The Arc de Triomphe, a monument dedicated to the soldiers who fought and died for France, provided a fitting backdrop for the interment. The tomb is located at the base of the monument, surrounded by wreaths and floral tributes. The atmosphere was one of somber reflection, as the crowd observed a moment of silence in honor of the fallen soldier and all those who had made the ultimate sacrifice. The 1st of November 1920 marked the first anniversary of the Armistice of Compiègne, which officially ended the hostilities of World War 1. The interment of the Unknown Soldier was a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and a tribute to the enduring spirit of the French people. The photograph captures a moment in history that continues to resonate with people around the world, as a symbol of remembrance and respect for the fallen soldiers of World War 1.
