The illustration is taken from the Loten Collection, an extensive compilation of natural history prints, and was painted by Pieter Cornelius de Bevere around 1754-57. The Purple-Faced Langur is native to Asia, specifically in Sri Lanka, India, and Nepal, and is a member of the Cercopithecidae family, which includes Old World monkeys. The monkey's distinctive features include its purple face, which is a result of the presence of pigments in its skin.
