EDITORS COMMENTS
November 11, 1918: The Trumpet Call That Ended the War to End All Wars In the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918, the long-awaited end to the First World War finally came. The signing of the Armistice of Compiègne marked the cessation of hostilities between the Allied Powers and Germany, bringing an end to four long years of devastating conflict. This historic moment was signaled by the sound of a trumpet call, blown by Sergeant Joseph C. "Joe" Oberle of the 328th U.S. Infantry, 82nd Division. However, it was another American soldier, Private Andrew M. "Andy" Zebrowski of the 353rd Infantry, 85th Division, who gained recognition for sounding the call that echoed across the battlefields of Europe. As the sun began to rise on November 11, 1918, Zebrowski stood atop a hill near the village of Montdidier, France, and blew three long blasts on his trumpet. The haunting melody carried through the morning air, reaching the ears of German soldiers far and wide. The call was a clear message: the fighting was over. The image captured here shows Private Zebrowski in the act of sounding the trumpet call, his face etched with determination and resolve. The scene is one of both triumph and relief, as the long-awaited peace finally came to the war-torn world. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the historic significance of that fateful day in 1918, and the role that Private Zebrowski and his trumpet played in bringing an end to the First World War. It is a powerful symbol of hope and renewal, and a testament to the enduring power of peace.
