EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment five C-class submarines of the United States Navy gracefully navigate through the Gatun Locks of the Panama Canal in 1917. The Panama Canal, an engineering marvel of the modern world, had only been in operation for a few years at the time, and the passage of submarines through its locks was a significant milestone in the waterway's history. The C-class submarines, built between 1915 and 1918, were the first truly successful fleet submarines of the U.S. Navy. With a length of 271 feet and a displacement of 1,212 tons, these submarines were larger and more advanced than their predecessors. They were designed to operate in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and their successful transit through the Panama Canal demonstrated their versatility and capability. The passage of these submarines through the Gatun Locks marked a new era in naval transportation. Prior to the construction of the canal, U.S. Navy submarines had to be dismantled and transported around the tip of South America to move between the two oceans. The Panama Canal provided a more efficient and cost-effective means of transport, allowing the Navy to quickly deploy its submarines to various parts of the world. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the engineers and sailors who built and operated these submarines and the Panama Canal. It also highlights the critical role that the U.S. Navy played in the defense of the Western Hemisphere and the global community during the early 20th century. The passage of these submarines through the Gatun Locks is a significant moment in both U.S. Navy and Panama Canal history, and this photograph captures that history in a striking and evocative way.
