EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the intensity and danger of the First World War at sea, as HMS Badger, an Acheron-class destroyer of the Royal Navy, rams the German Navy U-19 off the Dutch coast in 1914. The Badger, the eighth Royal Navy ship to serve during the war, became the first allied vessel to successfully attack a German U-boat. In the chaotic scene, the Badger's searchlights pierce the darkness, illuminating the churning waves and the damaged U-19, which had been severely damaged but managed to return to port for repairs and survived the war. The ramming took place during the early hours of the evening or night, adding to the sense of mystery and suspense. The sight of the two vessels locked in combat on the stormy ocean underscores the bravery and determination of the naval forces during this pivotal moment in history. This powerful photograph is a testament to the fierce battles fought between the Allies and the Central Powers at sea, and serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made during the First World War.
