A shop keeper and his son feel they are being squeezed out of Gateshead High Street

A shop keeper and his son feel they are being squeezed out of Gateshead High Street.
George and Ian Murray have sold cookers and washing machines on the once thriving shopping street for over 40 years, but they say they re being offered only a fraction of what their property is worth by the council.
They ve been told they will receive £ 45, 000 if they sell it to Gateshead Council who want to knock it down for housing.
But Ian, 53, said thats unfair as the council bought The Shed next door for £ 451, 000, number 191 the High Street for £ 270, 000, and two properties next door for £ 170, 000.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures the deep sense of frustration and injustice felt by a shopkeeper and his son as they face the prospect of being pushed out of their beloved Gateshead High Street. George and Ian Murray have been serving the community for over four decades, selling essential appliances like cookers and washing machines. However, their loyalty seems to be met with indifference from the council, who are offering them a mere fraction of what their property is truly worth. The father-son duo has been informed that if they sell their shop to Gateshead Council, it will fetch a meager £45,000. This offer appears even more unjust when compared to other recent purchases made by the council in the area. The neighboring property known as "The Shed" was acquired for an astonishing £451,000, while number 191 on High Street fetched £270,000. Additionally, two adjacent properties were purchased for £170,000 each. As this snapshot freezes a moment in time from August 3rd, 1998 – during which Boots Pharmacy stands prominently alongside various buildings and structures – it serves as a reminder of how commercial interests can often overshadow those who have dedicated their lives to serving local communities. The image also features buses and cars bustling along Gatehead's busy streets; symbols of progress juxtaposed against George and Ian's struggle. Photographer Paul Norris skillfully captures not only this family's plight but also echoes sentiments shared by many small business owners facing similar challenges during this era in history.
