British Armys new self propelled bridges. It is now revealed that two new bridging

British Armys new self propelled bridges. It is now revealed that two new bridging methods have been used by the British Army in Europe and are now being used extensively in Burma for crossing small rivers and canals, surmounting anti-tank ditches and concrete emplacements, and forming ramps for scaling cliffs and other obstacles. For supporting a bridge strong enough to take 38 tons is used. The bridge is fitted to the top of the tank by supports, and an arm worked by hydraulic pressure on the front of the tank lifts the bridge clear of the supports, brings it over and deposits it across the gap to be bridged. The Ark 2 bridge, of which the latest form is known as the Twaby has a superstructure on which are built two ramps which can be dropped down one front and one rear of the tank. On reaching anti-tank ditch, the Twaby is ditched in it and the ramps are let down to the bridge. An earlier form of the Ark carries one ramp in front which can be placed in position for scaling purposes. Picture shows, a scissors bridge laid over a river on the road to Tilburg. June 1945

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the British Army's innovative self-propelled bridges, revealing two groundbreaking bridging methods that have revolutionized military operations in Europe and Burma. These ingenious bridges are now extensively employed for a multitude of purposes, including crossing small rivers and canals, overcoming anti-tank ditches and concrete emplacements, as well as creating ramps to conquer cliffs and other obstacles. To support such remarkable feats, a robust bridge capable of withstanding 38 tons is utilized. The bridge is securely attached to the tank's top through supports, while an arm operated by hydraulic pressure at the front of the tank lifts it clear off these supports. With precision and efficiency, this mechanism transports the bridge across gaps that need bridging. The Ark 2 bridge represents one variant of this extraordinary technology known as Twaby in its latest form. It features a superstructure equipped with two drop-down ramps—one positioned at the front and another at the rear of the tank—allowing seamless navigation over anti-tank ditches. An earlier version of Ark possesses a single ramp placed strategically in front for scaling purposes. In this particular image captured on June 1945 along Tilburg's road, we witness a mesmerizing sight—a scissors bridge gracefully spanning over a river. This photograph serves as an enduring testament to both human ingenuity and military prowess during times when innovation was paramount for victory on various fronts.
