Shepherd Hairdressing Farm labourers in the hills of Shropshire were growing

Shepherd Hairdressing
Farm labourers in the hills of Shropshire were growing their hair long, owing to dearth of barbers in their villages, until Joseph Williams, a shepherd of Clun Farm, volunteered to clip them with his sheep shears.
Williams, who tends 300 sheep, is an expert with the sheers and receives customers at the farm one hour weekly.
He makes a good job of the haircuts, each one taking 3 minutes. No charge is made for the service, but each customer makes a small gift, such as a bottle of beer, a few cigarettes etc.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Shepherd Hairdressing" takes us back to the hills of Shropshire in 1943. In a time when barbers were scarce, farm laborers grew their hair long until Joseph Williams, a skilled shepherd from Clun Farm, stepped up to offer his services with sheep shears. With 300 sheep under his care, Williams became an expert at wielding the shears and dedicated one hour each week to attending customers at the farm. The haircuts he provided were efficient and precise, taking only three minutes per person. Although no charge was imposed for this unique service, each customer expressed their gratitude by presenting small gifts such as bottles of beer or cigarettes. The image captures a moment frozen in time - a medium-sized group of hardworking individuals gathered around Williams as he skillfully trims their hair amidst the picturesque backdrop of stables and farmland. This snapshot not only showcases the resourcefulness and camaraderie among rural communities during World War II but also highlights the ingenuity of individuals like Joseph Williams who found innovative ways to support their fellow villagers. Preserved by McLellan's lens, this photograph serves as a testament to human resilience and adaptability even in times of scarcity. It offers us a glimpse into history while reminding us that acts of kindness can transcend boundaries and professions – even transforming humble shepherds into unexpected hairstylists for those in need.
