EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage poster from the Liverpool Overhead Railway (LOR) dating back to 1923-1950. The poster was designed to promote the round trip of the docks and ocean liners offered by this iconic railway. Known for its groundbreaking innovations, the LOR holds several notable firsts in railway history. In 1821, it became the world's first electrically-worked railway, revolutionizing transportation at that time. Additionally, it was also the first railway to introduce an escalator, automatic signaling system, and a color light system. Despite nationalization efforts during its operational years until closure in 1956, the Liverpool Overhead Railway remained independent throughout its existence. This independence allowed it to maintain a unique identity within Britain's rail network. The artwork featured on this poster is credited to W. T. , whose creative vision beautifully captures both the charm of Liverpool's docks and bustling ocean liner activity. Preserved by NRM/Pictorial Collection at National Railway Museum, this print serves as a testament to an era when railways were not only means of transport but also symbols of progress and innovation
