EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the stunning Clyde Coast in all its glory, as depicted in a 1931 poster created by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). The poster was designed to promote the train and steamer services available from Craigendoran Pier, enticing travelers to explore this picturesque destination. The artwork for this piece was skillfully crafted by Frank Mason, a talented artist with a deep connection to the sea. Having been educated at HMS Conway and spending time at sea himself, Mason possessed an intimate understanding of marine and coastal subjects. His expertise shines through in this beautiful portrayal of the Clyde Coast. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Mason also had involvement in engineering and shipbuilding endeavors in Leeds and Hartlepool. This multidimensional talent allowed him to bring a unique perspective to his railway poster designs. The Jeannie Deans steamers featured prominently on this LNER poster were renowned for their service along the Clyde Coast. Although commercial use is not mentioned, it is evident that these steamers played an integral role in transporting passengers across these scenic waters. Preserved within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print serves as both a historical artifact and an exquisite representation of travel advertising during its time. It invites viewers to immerse themselves into a bygone era where exploration of Scotland's remarkable coastline awaited those who embarked on LNER's trains and steamers
