EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning vintage poster, created in 1927 by renowned artist Norman Wilkinson, captures the essence of Galloway, a picturesque region in the Southern Highlands of Scotland. Commissioned by London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS), this artwork was designed to entice travelers to explore the breathtaking landscapes and idyllic countryside accessible through rail travel. Wilkinson's artistic expertise shines through as he skillfully portrays the natural beauty of Galloway. The poster showcases rolling hills, majestic mountains, and lush greenery that stretch as far as the eye can see. With meticulous attention to detail and vibrant colors, Wilkinson transports viewers into this enchanting realm where nature reigns supreme. Having studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art, Wilkinson was no stranger to capturing marine scenes on canvas. However, his talent extended beyond seascapes; he became renowned for his ability to create captivating posters for various railway companies. In fact, he organized the Royal Academy series of posters for London & Midlands Railway (LMR) back in 1924. Measuring an impressive 1016 mm x 635 mm, this print is a true testament to both Wilkinson's artistic prowess and LMS's commitment to promoting travel experiences through their railway network. Preserved by National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection today, it serves as a timeless reminder of Galloway's allure and stands as a testament to the golden age of rail travel.
