EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Samuel John Govier's sister, Bessie, accompanied by her loyal canine companion, standing in the doorway of Samuel's photographic van in Cornwall during the early 1900s. As a pioneering photographer in the late 19th and early 20th century, Govier embarked on his photographic journeys either on his trusty bicycle or within a horse-drawn van before eventually establishing a studio in Chacewater in 1907. His passion for capturing moments led him to open another studio in St Agnes later on. In this particular snapshot frozen in time, we catch a glimpse of Bessie adorned with an exquisite Victorian-era costume that highlights the fashion trends of that era. The intricate details and elegance of her attire are beautifully juxtaposed against the rustic backdrop provided by Govier's caravan. Samuel John Govier's legacy extends beyond his remarkable photography skills; after retiring from his artistic pursuits, he transitioned into becoming a grocer while continuing to reside in Chacewater until the end of his days. Meanwhile, Bessie went on to marry and became Mrs. Bessie Olver before passing away at an impressive age of 97. This photograph not only captures a moment shared between siblings but also serves as a testament to Govier's invaluable contribution to preserving Cornish history through his lens.
