EDITORS COMMENTS
This 18th-century print showcases the intricate family tree of Adam and Eve, as depicted in the Judeo-Christian biblical tradition. The image portrays the lineage of humanity's first couple, tracing their descendants through generations. According to Genesis, Adam and Eve had three sons: Cain, Abel, and Seth. Tragically, Cain murdered his brother Abel. The family tree presented here divides into two branches: the Cainite line and the Sethite line. The former extends up to eight generations with Lamech's children from his two wives. Meanwhile, the latter stretches further to eleven generations with Noah's three sons from the biblical deluge story. This remarkable artwork is part of a larger collection titled "An universal history" published in London between 1736 and 1744. It provides a visual representation of biblical genealogy that holds significant religious importance for both Judaism and Christianity. As we explore this monochrome illustration filled with names such as Enoch, Methuselah, Jabal, Naamah, and many others mentioned in ancient texts like Torah or Hebrew Bible (Old Testament), it offers us a glimpse into our shared ancestry rooted in Middle Eastern history. The Middle Temple Library/Science Photo Library has preserved this historical gem that serves as a testament to our collective heritage—a reminder of our origins traced back centuries ago when Adam and Eve walked upon Earth.
