Jigsaw Puzzle : Composite image of the phases of the Moon
Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Composite image of the phases of the Moon
Moon phases. Time-lapse image of the phases of the Moon, as seen from Earth during a lunar (synodic) month. A full Moon is at centre, with pairs of (from inner to outer) gibbous Moons, quarter Moons and crescent Moons. The lunar phases occur because the Moon does not produce its own light, but reflects that of the Sun. As it travels around the Earth during its 29.53-day orbit, parts of the Moons surface which are visible from Earth become shadowed by the Moon itself. Crescent Moons occur when the Moon lies almost between the Earth and Sun, and full moons occur when the Moon is furthest from the Sun

EDITORS COMMENTS
This composite image showcases the mesmerizing phases of the Moon, as observed from our planet Earth during a lunar month. At the heart of this celestial display lies a magnificent full Moon, radiating its ethereal glow. Surrounding it are pairs of gibbous Moons, quarter Moons, and crescent Moons, each representing different stages in its monthly cycle. The enchanting dance of these lunar phases is a result of the Moon's unique relationship with the Sun. Devoid of its own light source, our faithful satellite reflects sunlight to illuminate its surface. As it gracefully orbits around our planet over approximately 29.53 days, certain areas on the Moon become veiled by its own shadow when viewed from Earth. Crescent Moons materialize when our satellite positions itself between Earth and the Sun while full moons occur when it reaches maximum distance from our star. This rhythmic interplay between light and shadow creates an awe-inspiring spectacle that has fascinated humanity for centuries. Through this remarkable photograph captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded not only of the beauty inherent in nature but also how interconnected celestial bodies shape our understanding of science and astronomy. It serves as a testament to mankind's ceaseless curiosity about planetary wonders and invites us to contemplate both their cosmic significance and their poetic allure.
