Copper sulphate reaction
Copper sulphate reactions. Image 3 of 3. This show the product of a reaction between copper sulphate solution with first ammonia and then hydrochloric acid. The addition of hydrochloric acid causes tetrachlorocuprate II complex ions ((CuCl4)2-) to form. These are yellow in colour, and mix with the blue copper ions to produce green. The initial copper sulphate solution can be seen in image A500/561. The reaction of that solution with ammonia can be seen in image A500/562

EDITORS COMMENTS
The captivating print captures the mesmerizing transformation of copper sulphate solution through a series of chemical reactions. In this third and final image, we witness the remarkable outcome when copper sulphate solution interacts with ammonia followed by hydrochloric acid. The addition of hydrochloric acid triggers the formation of tetrachlorocuprate II complex ions ( (CuCl4)2-), which exhibit a vibrant yellow hue. These striking yellow complexes seamlessly blend with the original blue copper ions, resulting in an enchanting shade of green. This photograph is part of a comprehensive series documenting various stages of this intriguing reaction. Image A500/561 showcases the initial appearance of copper sulphate solution, while image A500/562 depicts its interaction with ammonia. Together, these images provide a visual narrative that unravels the intricate chemistry behind this process. Taken in a laboratory setting, this print exemplifies the wonders and intricacies inherent in inorganic chemistry. It highlights how different substances can interact to create new compounds and visually demonstrates how metal ions respond to specific stimuli.
