James Chadwick, British physicist C017 / 7111

James Chadwick (1891-1974), British physicist. Educated in Manchester, Chadwicks research under Rutherford was mainly with alpha particles (helium nuclei). He used data gained in these experiments to show that the positive charge of a nucleus (model nucleus held in his hand) is the same as its atomic number. In 1932, he re-interpreted an experiment by the Joliot-Curies as evidence for the existence of the neutron. Chadwicks own experiments confirmed this. This discovery was key to the advance of nuclear physics, with neutrons used to initiate nuclear reactions. In 1935, Chadwick was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the brilliant mind and groundbreaking discoveries of James Chadwick, a renowned British physicist. Born in 1891, Chadwick's educational journey led him to Manchester, where he conducted extensive research under Ernest Rutherford's guidance. Focusing on alpha particles (helium nuclei), Chadwick utilized data from his experiments to unveil a remarkable revelation - the positive charge of a nucleus is equivalent to its atomic number. In 1932, Chadwick reinterpreted an experiment by the Joliot-Curies, providing compelling evidence for the existence of neutrons. His own experiments further confirmed this crucial discovery that revolutionized nuclear physics. Neutrons became instrumental in initiating nuclear reactions and propelled advancements in this field. Recognizing his immense contributions, James Chadwick was honored with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1935. This esteemed accolade solidified his status as one of history's most influential scientists. The portrait captured within this print portrays an intelligent and determined individual who forever altered our understanding of atoms and subatomic particles. With meticulous attention to detail, GARY BROWN/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY has beautifully illustrated Chadwick holding a model nucleus - symbolizing his profound insights into its composition. This artwork serves as a testament to James Chadwick's lasting legacy within the scientific community and beyond. As we admire this historical image, we are reminded of how one person's dedication can reshape our knowledge and pave the way for future breakthroughs.
