Pope Gregory XIII, Italian pope

Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585). Statue of the Italian educator Ugo Buoncompagni, who was pope of the Roman Catholic Church between 1572-1585. He was instrumental in the revision of the Julian calendar, which had be introduced by Julius Caesar in 45BC. This new Gregorian calendar had been devised to closely approximate the tropical year, which is the actual length of time it takes for the Earth to complete an orbit of the Sun (365.242190 days). Many European Catholic countries adopted the new calendar when it was introduced in 1582, which required that 10 days be lost from the first year, and that every fourth year (leap) there is an extra day in February

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the esteemed figure of Pope Gregory XIII, an influential Italian pope who reigned from 1572 to 1585. The statue depicted here is a remarkable tribute to Ugo Buoncompagni, as he was known before becoming pontiff. Pope Gregory XIII played a pivotal role in revising the Julian calendar, originally established by Julius Caesar in 45 BC. The Gregorian calendar, named after this visionary pope, aimed to align more accurately with the Earth's orbit around the Sun. With its introduction in 1582, numerous European Catholic countries embraced this new system. However, adopting it required skipping ahead by ten days during that first year and adding an extra day every fourth year (leap year) in February. Crafted from bronze and exuding historical significance, this monument stands as a testament to Pope Gregory XIII's profound impact on timekeeping and his commitment to scientific advancement within the Roman Catholic Church. As both an educator and spiritual leader of immense influence, he left an indelible mark on history. Through this print captured by Science Photo Library, we are transported back in time to witness the legacy of Pope Gregory XIII unfold before our eyes—a reminder of how one individual can shape our understanding of time itself.
