Jigsaw Puzzles from Science Photo Library
Sample of pyrite
Pyrite. Macrophotograph of a sample of pyrite (iron sulphide). This is the most abundant sulphide in the Earths lithosphere. It forms large cubic crystals, with a golden yellow colour. The crystals are hard and heavy but very brittle. It was once important for the formation of sulphuric acid in the lead chamber process, but this method is now obsolete. Apart from the small gold, cobalt and other metals it contains, pyrite has no commercial value above that to collectors and museums. This sample came from Pasto Bueno, Peru

EDITORS COMMENTS
This macrophotograph showcases a stunning sample of pyrite, also known as iron sulphide. As the most abundant sulphide found in the Earth's lithosphere, pyrite forms magnificent cubic crystals that exude a mesmerizing golden yellow hue. Despite its alluring appearance, this mineral possesses unique properties - it is both hard and heavy yet remarkably brittle. In the past, pyrite played a crucial role in the production of sulphuric acid through the lead chamber process. However, with advancements in technology, this method has become obsolete. Today, apart from containing small traces of gold, cobalt, and other metals within its structure, pyrite holds no commercial value beyond being cherished by collectors and museums worldwide. The featured specimen originates from Pasto Bueno in Peru – an area renowned for its rich geological diversity. This particular crystal exemplifies the beauty and complexity inherent to pyrite formations. Its intricate details are expertly captured in this high-quality print by Science Photo Library. As we gaze upon this image of nature's artistry frozen in time, we are reminded of both the wonders hidden beneath our planet's surface and humanity's ceaseless pursuit to understand them better.
