EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic Duke of Cornwall, number 3252, a 4-4-0 Duke class locomotive, proudly displayed at the Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway (GWR). Built in 1895, this majestic steam engine was named after the Duke of Cornwall and Duke of Rothesay, Prince Albert Victor, who was the eldest son of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra at the time. The Duke class locomotives were designed by George Jackson Churchward, the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the GWR, between 1894 and 1902. They were renowned for their power and efficiency, making them a staple of the GWR fleet during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Number 3252, like its contemporaries, was fitted with a Belpaire firebox and a large boiler, which allowed it to carry an ample supply of water and coal for long journeys. Its distinctive black livery, adorned with gold lining and intricate lettering, adds to its regal appearance. This photograph captures the Duke of Cornwall in its prime, with its powerful wheels and impressive steam plume. The engine's presence in the Steam Museum of the GWR serves as a testament to the rich railway heritage of the Great Western Railway and the enduring allure of steam locomotives. As visitors explore the museum, they can step back in time and experience the sights, sounds, and even the smells of a bygone era, all while marveling at the engineering marvels that once powered the railways of Britain. The Duke of Cornwall, number 3252, stands as a proud reminder of the past and a tribute to the ingenuity and passion that drove the development of the railways.
