This print showcases Joanna, the remarkable Queen regnant of Castile and Aragon during the late 15th century. Known as Joanna the Mad, her reign marked the end of the illustrious Iberian House of Trastámara dynasty. In this portrait, Joanna exudes an air of elegance and grace befitting a queen. Joanna's life was not without turmoil, however. Despite her beauty and intelligence, she struggled with mental health issues that earned her the moniker "Juana la Loca" in Spanish history. This unfortunate nickname belied her true potential as a ruler. Married to Philip I of Burgundy at a young age, their union initiated a tumultuous period for Joanna. The Habsburg prince would later become King Philip I of Castile but died prematurely in 1506. This tragic loss further exacerbated Joanna's fragile state of mind. Despite these challenges, Joanna left an indelible mark on Spanish royalty through her rule over both Castile and Aragon. Her legacy is one that intertwines love, power struggles, tragedy, and resilience—a testament to the complexities faced by those who wear crowns.
