EDITORS COMMENTS
This vintage engraving from 1890 captures the exhilarating and treacherous experience of a naval trip to shore in rough weather. Titled "The Return From The Shore" it showcases various scenes that depict the challenges faced by sailors during their journey. In the first image, titled "First Come, First Served" we witness the chaotic scramble as sailors rush to board the boat back to their ship. The second scene, called "Tacking" shows skilled seamen maneuvering through turbulent waters with precision and expertise. Through a telescope two miles off, we see a vignette of the shoreline in all its Victorian charm in the third picture titled "Pretty Enough". However, this idyllic view is juxtaposed with cautionary words exchanged between crew members about potential danger if they capsize while wearing an Ulster coat. Meanwhile, officers on board watch anxiously as their comrades return safely from shore in "Watching From The Ship". Some postpone dressing for dinner to greet them warmly upon arrival at Folkestone harbor—a delicate attention appreciated but unnecessary for these weary sailors who present quite a disheveled appearance. Sitting to leeward with water sloshing around them becomes an uncomfortable reality depicted in another frame. It illustrates how even dignified temper can be tested when attempting to disembark gracefully only to be enveloped by lowered sails. This nineteenth-century engraving offers us a glimpse into naval history and reminds us of both the perils and triumphs experienced by those who braved rough seas for duty's sake.
