The artwork, measuring 74.9 x 54.4 cm, is a remarkable example of mixed technique on basswood and remains unsigned. The focal point of the composition is undoubtedly the crucifixion scene itself, where Jesus hangs on the cross in profound agony. The artist's attention to detail is evident in every brushstroke, as he skillfully captures the raw emotion and suffering endured by Christ. A notable feature of this artwork is the crosstitulus inscription above Jesus' head which reads ÔÇó I ÔÇó N ÔÇó R ÔÇó I ÔÇó (meaning "Jesus Nazarenus Rex Iudaeorum" or "Jesus of Nazareth, King of Jews"). Additionally, an inscription can be found on the centurion's head stating VERE FILLIVS [SIC!] DEI ERAT ILLE (translated as "Truly this man was the Son [of God]"). These inscriptions add depth and significance to Grunewald's portrayal. Matthias Grunewald himself hailed from Wurzburg between 1480-83 and passed away in Halle an der Saale in 1528.
