EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a magnificent Mediterranean Sea Map from the year 1872, originally published by Justus Perthes in his renowned atlas. Justus Perthes, a German publisher born in Rudolstadt in 1749, established his eponymous business in Gotha in 1785. His son Wilhelm joined him in 1814 and played a pivotal role in developing the Geographical Branch of the company. Under Wilhelm's guidance, notable German geographers such as Heinrich Berghaus and Karl Spruler collaborated to create remarkable works like Adolf Stieler's Atlas. The map itself is an exquisite example of illustrative technique through engravement, showcasing the intricate details of coastlines, islands, and cities that dot the Mediterranean region. Its vintage charm and retro styling transport us back to an era when maps were meticulously crafted pieces of art. Housed within this historical gem are echoes of Gotha's rich cultural heritage. Located in Thuringia near Erfurt, Germany, Gotha served as the birthplace for both Justus Perthes and his esteemed publishing house. The Liszt Collection has beautifully preserved this engraved image from their archives.
