This double-sided artwork, created around 1620, showcases the remarkable talent of Italian artist Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, also known as Guercino. On one side of the sheet, we are presented with a meticulously detailed drawing featuring a youth kneeling before a prelate. The pen and brown ink strokes bring life to this intimate scene, while the light brown wash adds depth and dimension to their figures. It is believed that this sketch was part of Guercino's preparatory work for an altarpiece depicting Saint William, Duke of Aquitaine receiving his monastic habit. Flipping over the print reveals another study by Guercino on the verso side. Here we find closely observed sketches of principal figures that were intended for inclusion in the same altarpiece mentioned earlier. These delicate brushstrokes showcase Guercino's mastery in capturing human form and expression. This exquisite piece was originally painted for San Gregorio church but can now be admired at Pinacoteca Nazionale. Its large size (measuring approximately 9 3/8 x 7 9/16 inches or 238 x 192 cm) allows us to appreciate every intricate detail up close.
