EDITORS COMMENTS

This plate, number 50 from Le Regne Vegetal, Vol 12, Hort. Atlas, 1870, held in the esteemed Botany Library at the Natural History Museum, presents a delightful collection of edible nuts and their respective fruits. The illustration showcases four distinct nut varieties: (1) Lambert's nut (Juglans cinerea), (2) Chestnut (Castanea spp.), (3) Hazelnut (Corylus avellana), and (4) Almond (Amygdalus communis). The Lambert's nut, also known as the American filbert or butternut, is depicted with its brown, spiky husk enclosing a single, smooth, brown nut. The Chestnut tree, a member of the Fagaceae family, is illustrated with its familiar brown, spiky burr enveloping the glossy, brown, and smooth, oblong-shaped fruit. The Hazelnut, a beloved member of the Betulaceae family, is displayed with its brown, smooth, and oval-shaped nut encased in a light brown, prickly husk. Lastly, the Almond tree blossom is subtly included in the illustration, with its delicate, pink, and five-petaled flowers gracing the branches above the nut-bearing branches. As a horticultural, botanical, and illustrative masterpiece, this plate offers a glimpse into the rich diversity of the Angiospermae, specifically the Eudicot, Fabidae, and Amygdaleae families. These nut-bearing plants, which include the Fagales, Eurosids, and Almond tree, are essential components of the Magnoliophyta, the class of flowering plants. Each nut and its respective fruit represents a unique and intricate facet of the natural world, showcasing the beauty and complexity of the plant kingdom.
