A prominent English soldier and statesman, Mountjoy rose to prominence under Queen Elizabeth I, serving in various military campaigns against Scotland and Ireland. In 1603, he was created Earl of Devonshire, adding to his existing titles of Baron Mountjoy and Baron Newport.
